IMD Issues Very Heavy Rainfall Warning Across India
IMD issues ‘heavy rainfall’ warning for Maharashtra, Karnataka, other states today
As the Southwest monsoon progresses, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a ‘very heavy rainfall’ warning for multiple regions of the country. According to the IMD, this intense rainfall is expected to persist over parts of Maharashtra and Karnataka for the next 24 hours, gradually decreasing thereafter.
Senior IMD scientist Dr. Soma Sen Roy highlighted the severity of the situation, stating that heavy to extremely heavy rainfall has been observed in Maharashtra and parts of coastal Karnataka over the past 2-3 days. The affected areas include south and Central Maharashtra, Marathwada, South Madhya Maharashtra, Konkan, and Coastal Karnataka. Additionally, parts of north interior Karnataka are also likely to experience very heavy rainfall.
Despite heavy rainfall, Mumbai managed to avoid major waterlogging issues. The city received 50 millimeters of rain within a 24-hour period ending on Tuesday morning.
In its bulletin, the IMD forecasted ‘fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall’ accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds over several northeastern states, including Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim over the next seven days.
Specifically, isolated heavy rainfall is expected in various regions during specific periods. For example, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Assam, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh may experience heavy rainfall from June 10 to 14, while other areas like Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura could witness heavy rainfall on June 10, 13, and 14.
Furthermore, isolated to scattered light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds is expected over Gangetic West Bengal, Bihar, and Odisha from July 12 to 14, and in Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, and Chhattisgarh over the next five days.
The IMD also warned of isolated hailstorms and squally winds over south Madhya Pradesh on June 11.
As the monsoon progresses, it's crucial for residents and authorities in these regions to stay updated on weather forecasts and take necessary precautions to mitigate any potential risks associated with heavy rainfall and severe weather conditions.
